Disclosure: I am Scottish by birth but I am far removed from there and have been since childhood. My last visit to Scotland was about six or seven years ago and resulted in several accusations of being an Australian ( we sound totally different ) followed by an explanation that I was a Kiwi. The other tangible result was a picture taken outside my first home in Edinburgh that I use on my Blogger profile.
My sister wouldn't allow me to knock on the door and introduce myself to the current residents so I have no recovered memory of the interior of the house I spent my infancy in and my only memories of Scotland then are of Dundee, or more specifically Monifieth. They are many.....and from a long time ago.
Today is Independence Day in The Democratic Republic of Congo. It is our time to join the DR Congo and the vast majority of nations in the world.
JK Rowling is right that kneejerk, sentimental patriotism is unappealing but why wouldn't Scotland want to govern itself, with UK democracy in such a parlous state?
