Zimbabwe PM Tsvangirai marries despite court ban
Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has got married, despite a court ruling blocking the move.
Mr Tsvangirai, 60, and Elizabeth Macheka, 35, exchanged rings in Harare under an alternative "customary marriage" law that allows polygamy.He could not be married under the country's monogamous law because the court ruled that he already had a wife.
That is a surprise last week The Scotsman.com reported the previous marriage to Locadia Tembo to be a customary marriage which should have left Tsvangirai free to marry monogamously.
Some analysts say the court case could be an attempt to besmirch his name ahead of next year's presidential poll.
Mr Tsvangirai is expected to challenge President Robert Mugabe, 88, who is in a fractious coalition with the prime minister.
But others say he has only himself to blame for the marriage controversy as he has been involved with a number of women since his wife died in a car crash soon after he became prime minister in 2009.
I have no doubt there are political agendas being played out it is interesting to note the political pedigrees of the previous bride and the most recent one.
Relationship 'damaged'
Mr Tsvangirai was married before hundreds of guests at a smart wedding venue in Harare on Saturday.
But the prime minister, wearing a dark suit, and Elizabeth Macheka, in a white gown, did not sign a register recording the marriage as monogamous, as they had planned.
Elizabeth Macheka is the daughter of a local politician from Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.
The wedding comes a day after a magistrate said that Mr Tsvangirai's former lover Locardia Tembo had proved she was his wife under the "customary marriage" law. A high court judge had earlier thrown out her application.
Interesting a high court judge ( no less ) says it is legal and a magistrate ( no more ) says it is illegal now in most jurisdictions the magistrate could probably expect that his career had pretty much reached its pinnacle with that decision. He would have signed the register in any normal jurisdiction.
"The marriage licence that had been issued to the premier has been cancelled," Ms Tembo's lawyer, Everson Samkange, said after Friday's ruling. "If he goes ahead with the wedding, he will be committing bigamy," he said, according to the AFP news agency. Ms Tembo, 39, a commodity trader and sister of a Zanu-PF MP, had demanded $15,000 (£9,310) a month in maintenance expenses from the prime minister.
By having a traditional marriage Tsvangirai certainly avoids the bigamy issue. Marriage has through out history been a mechanism of political alliances and both woman bring Zanu PF credentials.
In November, Ms Tembo and Mr Tsvangirai reportedly held a traditional wedding, and Mr Tsvangirai had paid a bride price of several hundred thousand dollars.
Shortly thereafter, Mr Tsvangirai said their relationship had been "irretrievably damaged" after it was "hijacked" by his opponents, including state security agents.
Nothing would surprise me in a country where a magistrate can over rule a high court judge. Infact you can't even count out the possibility that PM Tsvangirai is a sex maniac.
